The
GBA SP as Jerk repellant
I pay my cell
phone bill at my local Radio Shack. It’s convenient, assures
me of no late fees and is more or less painless. The more painless
part is because these jags over at the Radio Shack think they’re
salesmen. They shill me with cell phone offers and all other manner
of second-rate crap that the gods deemed Radio Shack worthy; that
is to say it’s crap. It’s the same type of stuff you’d
see at a Best Buy but there’s less of it and more than likely
it’s a Tandy brand rip-off instead of the real McCoy. So I
always say “No, thank you.” See? I’m a nice person.
I don’t fuss and don’t get frustrated openly with these
idiots. I just wait until they finish the transaction and then I
go out on my way. But today I decided that I just didn’t have
it in me to go through that, however the fact that I had to pay
the bill at this time persisted. So I came upon a solution: I would
play my copy of “Tactic Ogre” on my Game Boy Advance
SP with the headphones on, thus making me impervious to all their
advances. And it worked, kinda. I didn’t have to answer any
stupid questions at the check out counter, save one. While I’m
transacting my business with the cashier another guy comes up to
me – my least favorite clerk, the one with all of the different
sales pitches – and asks me if I found everything I was looking
for. What a prick! I looked at him with a visage that spoke annoyance
and then motioned towards the GBA SP and said: “*sigh* yes”.
The point is not
that I’m a jerk and games make me antisocial. The point is
I really really hate the Radio Shack and especially that one sales
clerk that works there, and I’m glad that my gaming habit
can minimize my exposure to annoying situations.

I
got your drama, right here!
So
I’m almost through my DVD box set of the first two seasons
of “Homicide, Life on the Street” and in case you didn’t
already know, tell you this is good good stuff. I’ve long
been of the opinion that “Homicide” was one of the best
shows to ever air and taking this second look on DVD I think I was
right. If only for the 6th episode “Three Men and Adena”
it’s worth the paltry $40 their asking for it. I just hope
that they eventually release all of the episodes, as the middle
years of the series were definitely the finest.

An interesting
side effect of the transition from cartridge to disc is what happens
in the event of a crash. In the old days Link would just sit there
in the same spot, the entire screen would freeze, or worse it would
start to streak unintelligibly almost imitating a wave and the sound
would be stuck on a single note. Yesterday while going through an
interesting bit of “Shenmue II” I came upon the modern
day version of this; the screen went blank and then I was told that
the disc could not be read and would I please remove it and place
in a disc that could be read, thank you. Besides the fury I was
feeling because I had not saved at the last given opportunity and
I would have to rework the last few minutes at a later time, I also
couldn’t help but feel patronized by my Xbox. It had crashed
on me, it was then smart enough to know that it had crashed on me
& then finally with a cold touch it told me that it wasn’t
its fault it had crashed but rather the disc was to blame and wasn’t
I an asshole for letting my property fall into a state of disrepair.
I simple blue or blank screen with the word “Error”
would have done the job & would have left me feeling a little
bit better about my relationship with my machines.
As you are no
doubt wondering about the disc, it was, of course, spotless. I’ll
have to break out the game doctor or whatever that thing’s
called and simonize it before playing again.
